Is it just me or is there a distinct lack of shifting gears in the reasonably priced car? You know, if anyone left is still watching this garbage. Chris is about as obnoxious of a person as there is in the universe.

Kinja'd!!!

UPDATE: It is apparently a manual - as demonstrated by Chris Harris.

It’s a manual as Chris Harris shall now demonstrate with VR if you’re on a phone. Also THIS IS ENGLAND. Everyone drives manual or you don’t drive at all. (Apart from the 2% of drivers who got an automatic licence in 2015).

Oh awesome. Why can’t Chris just host this whole show?

Because as we saw on Extra Gear, He’s rather busy at the moment. The same goes for Rory, Eddie and Sabine. This is also why the series will only have 6 episodes with the other 12 in the Autumn. Hopefully they deal with the teething problems (oi no puns, we’re getting better) by then.

It was not a manual when the girl drove it... Sure. You can hear the car shifting from outside during her lap. 100% sure it was an automatic. Traditionnaly, they’ve always had both, manual and auto for guests who can’t drive a stick.

Second guest was driving a manual, you can see him shift at the start.

There were plenty of British celebs on the old top gear that either couldn’t drive stick or needed His Stigness to teach them how to drive stick. Plenty of Brits may have a licence to drive a manual, but, at least among celebs, there are quite a few that have forgotten the skill.

Yeah, that happened. In fairness, they also guest starred the main adventure.

Ah nope. Seriously no. That’s not even slightly true and kind of ignores the whole “don’t drive at all” part. Out of the 200 odd celebs around the track, 6 have used the automatic. 2 of those were Americans, leaving 4 Brits. Of those 4 Brits, 3 didn’t have a licence so that leaves 1 Brit who might of had an automatic only licence.

You seem to have latched onto the first part of my statement of “couldn’t drive stick” and missed the part of “needed His Stigness to teach them how to drive stick.” I recall quite a few missed shifts and grinding gears from various celebs over the years(as well as more than one celeb stating that the Stig had to teach them how to drive stick). I suspect quite a few of them had either lost the skill to drive manual due to lack of use, or never really had all that much skill in the first place and just drove auto to get around that.

Most celebs were fair game to do the lap with the manual, lest they be mocked by Clarkson for failure to do so, but there were quite a few that clearly had not driven manual for long enough that it showed.

No I read what you said and countered it with figures only for you to try a push it again with no evidence. Find me the celebs “the Stig had to teach them how to drive stick”. Then we can discuss whether or not they were really being taught how to operate a manual or were simply being told when to change gear around the track.

As for the odd gear grind or missed shift, I would like to point out that the vast majority of the celebs had not driven on a track and a lot of them spoke how terrifying it was.

Now this may sound odd to us enthusiasts but some people do freak out at speed and tend to lose their finesse so I’m gonna come with my own theory that no they did not lose their skill and indeed had it but we’re just nervous because of the previous mentioned freaking out, the nerves of being on TV, the fact that it’s a competition so tend to rush and that they most likely hadn’t driven the car before.

Anyway come at me with your evidence. Also 2% of the total celebs does not equal “plenty” or “quite a few”.

As of 2014, 25% of cars sold in the UK were automatics, and it is probably more now. Being able to pass your drivers test in a manual doesn’t mean that is what you are driving (or prefer to drive).

Never said it was. Heck I acknowledged that people drive automatics and of course it’s higher than 2%, I’m just being dramatic. To be blunt, I’m baffled that only around 25% of new cars are automatics. Times have changed and the cost gap between autos and manuals has shrunk massively in both buying and running but hey I guess some beliefs take a while to change and even then I would think most people would be happy to pay extra for luxury of giving your left leg a break but then again I would of thought more people would option AC in their cars. We are some right cheap bastards.

That evidence would require me to go back and watch every star in a reasonably priced car segment in every episode of TG. Quite frankly, I’m not going to do that to win an argument on the internet about something that doesn’t matter against someone I don’t know or really care about(nothing personal, I’ve just never met you or heard of you and I don’t generally care about people, beyond hoping nothing ill happens to them, that do not meet those criteria).

I can say that I’ve watched every episode of TG, aside from the most recent one, and I’ve heard either Clarkson or the guest state something of that sort a number of times. Was it the majority of the time? Certainly not. But it was, I’d wager, about once or twice a season. Missed shifts and the like were more common, probably every few episodes, and I’m sure most of them were just due to jitters and the like, but some were likely due to lack of familiarity with driving stick.

I would take that wager by the way but alas I ain’t watching over a decade of Top Gear either.

To be fair, I did say I hope nothing ill happens to you, so I at least care enough to not wish you misfortune. That puts you ahead of the vast majority of the people I interact with on a regular basis(I work in a call center).
